The Costa Brava is divided into three sections - Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà and La Selva. The parts of the coast has rich historical background which differc from one another so its interesting to visit almost every town around to understand the charecter of this charming area.

Alt Empordà

The Costa Brava's upper part that borders France is called Alt Empordà. In fact, Alt Empordà is а comarca within the province of Girona, with regional center in Figueres.

In the north it is effectively a stretch of Pyrenees which descends to the sea with a rugged silhouette of Cap de Creus peninsula. Numerous viewpoints on the peninsula open stunning views to the sea, nearby coastline and beautiful villages of Cadaques, Portlligat, El Port de la Selva, and Llanca.

To the South of Cap de Creus the mountains step down inland forming a plain that lies alongside the Bay of Roses, one of the best natural harbours on the coast. The plain slowly rolls down from mountains to the sea with wetlands of Aiguamolls de l`Empordà Natural Park, an ecological reserve located between Fluvià and Muga rivers.

Figueres, Castelló d'Empuries and Roses are the most visible towns in the area. Empuriabrava is right in the center of the Bay of Roses, in an enchanting entourage of nature and historical monuments.

Further to the South there are many places of interest in the area - ancient ruins of Empuries bringing together traces of Greek, Roman and Iberian past, local beach and campsites of Sant Pere Pescador, long promenade and perfect beaches of L'Escala.

Baix Empordà, La Selva

Baix Emporda and La Selva are areas, or comarques, on the Southern section of the Costa Brava. La Bisbal d'Emporda is a capital of Baix Empordà while La Selva's administrative center is in Santa Coloma de Farners. Blanes, Lloret de Mar, Palafrugell, Sant Feliu de Guixols and Palamos are the largest cities of the area.
