Cuitadella de Roses: the Historical Site and Concert Venue

The Cuitadella de Roses is a stronghold which was built in XVI century to protect the port of Roses from attacks of pirates and privateers. The Citadel was surrounded by a pentagonal wall which is partly remains in its place today. Visiting the citadel is easy and it is a must see place if you plan to explore the town of Roses which is located some 5-6 km to the North from Empuriabrava.
The place is currently an important local archeological site and venue for open air concerts - from classics to hard rock. You may find out about upcoming events in the tourist information office nearby or in the Museum of the Cuitadella.
The Museum
The Citadel Museum is open for visitors since May 2004. It's exposition covers the entire history of the place - from the early Greek colony to modern Roses times. Roses was one of the first places on Iberian Peninsula where ancient Greek civilization. The traces of the past are carefully preserved in the area, and particularly in Roses.
During the summer the Museum is open from 10 to 20 while during the winter season (October-March) it is open 10-18. The museum is closed on Mondays (as many other museums in Spain).
How to Get There
You wont miss the Cuitadella while driving from Empuriabrava to Roses - it is located to the South of Roses and you'll pass it on your way to the town. But just to be absolutely sure - Hotel Terazza is on the opposite side of the road from the citadel.
